I recently needed to look at a few Windows Icon Files (.ico) and wanted to be able to load them into Photoshop in case I wanted to make edits to the icons, and well we use Photoshop for all our editing so it would have been just the most convenient instead of having a completely separate editing software.

After a Google search I found Telegraphics plugin for Photoshop, and it does exactly what we needed! Allows us to not only open Icon files, but you can also edit them from within Photoshop.

The only downside to this plugin is that icon suites (multiple icon sizes in one file) although is supported, it can only handle editing one icon at a time, and creating suites is not possible. This isnt really a deal breaker, and the plugin author suggests a command line utility for creating icon suites which I will also link below. It would have been nice if the plugin used the animation features of Photoshop for the ability to create and edit icon suites – but perhaps it is not possible.

Telegraphics plugin supports all these wonderful versions of Photoshop, and most importantly supports the CC versions (which we use).

  • Photoshop on Mac:
    • Photoshop CS5 on Intel Macintosh (32/64 bit)
    • Photoshop CS3 & CS4 on 32-bit Intel and PowerPC Macintosh
    • Photoshop 3.0-7.0, CS, CS2 on PowerPC Macintosh (OS X, OS 9 and Classic)
    • Photoshop 4.0 / MacOS 8.0 on 68K Macintosh
  • Windows:
    • Photoshop 5.0 and any later version on Windows 98/NT, XP, Vista, and Windows 7
    • Paint Shop Pro 9 (may not work correctly with earlier versions due to PSP plugin compatibility issues)
    • Photoshop Elements
    • Photoshop CC (latest version supported)
