A client of ours has had an issue recently where their website ended up being Age Restricted by all the popular mobile networks, basically anyone who has not unlocked their mobile network for 18+ content and whom tries to visit the clients website gets an age restriction warning asking them to contact their provider and confirm their age to unlock the website using a credit card. This is obviously a serious issue for any business because almost everyone will unfortunately be hit by this regardless of their actual age because this filter is on by default. And the steps needed to unlock your phone is enough to even drive me to not bother. (i still have not unblocked my networks because the process just takes too much time and effort).
The problem is, what if your website is age appropriate, what if you are a business? Who gives anyone a right to censor a website for any reason? Especially in situations when a site is blocked automatically with no strict considerations, this is one of the worst things I have ever witnessed.
Unfortunately as a webmaster or as a site owner there is no way to detect any issues such as this unless you either see it yourself or someone reports it directly to you, considering people would not be able to even view your site header it makes this trickier because how can anyone get any contact details in order to alert you to any issues. It’s one of those things that really makes me feel sick inside to know the world allows such evil.
But anyway if your fortunate enough (or not so) to know that your site is being blocked by an age restriction verification there are some steps you can take to get your site reviewed and unblocked. Follow the steps below:
1. Contact the mobile networks
The first thing you should do is contact all of the mobile networks and give them your site url asking them to remove the restriction of your website, here are some contact email addresses for the most popular mobile networks:
Three
Appeals may be sent to content@three.co.uk.
Vodafone
Appeals may be sent to Contentclassification@vodafone.com.
O2
Appeals may be sent to ShieldAV@o2.com.
Tesco Mobile customers may email contact@tescomobile.com.
EE
Appeals may be sent to safeguard@ee.co.uk.
BT customers may email mobilecategorisation@bt.com.
2. Contact the BBFC
Give them about 5 days and then contact the BBFC and explain your situation and give them a list of the mobile networks affected and your website url. They can then review your site and inform each of the networks to unblock you. Make a mobile complaint.
All the steps above are compiled from information provided on the BBFC Appeals Page, and I must thank Daniel Pipes (We do not agree/disagree or have any opinion on his views and politics) for the information he provided when he had this issue with his website and how he got it corrected.
