Google has publicly announced that it will start boosting websites rankings if they use SSL 2048-bit key certificates on their websites.

However, Google also went on to say that, Although it does boost a website, it is a very weak part of there ranking algorithm and is far out weighed by things such as good high-quality content. Based on tests by Google, this change has only made an impact on less than 1% of global queries. However, the giants also went on to say that they may soon decide to strengthen the signal as they want to push for more websites guaranteeing safety online.

SSL is great for customer security and cuts out any chances of a middle man intercepting sensitive and valuable information. Surely a good thing? Yes.. But should such things be forced onto website owners.. If indeed Google do make security a larger ranking factor then people will be forced into buying SSL certificates even for the simplest of WebPages. Personally, I think people should take this as a warning and start making plans for there own SSL certificates.
