Google has publicly announced that it will start boosting websites rankings if they use SSL 2048-bit key certificates on their websites.

However, Google also went on to say that, Although it does boost a website, it is a very weak part of there ranking algorithm and is far out weighed by things such as good high-quality content. Based on tests by Google, this change has only made an impact on less than 1% of global queries. However, the giants also went on to say that they may soon decide to strengthen the signal as they want to push for more websites guaranteeing safety online.

SSL is great for customer security and cuts out any chances of a middle man intercepting sensitive and valuable information. Surely a good thing? Yes.. But should such things be forced onto website owners.. If indeed Google do make security a larger ranking factor then people will be forced into buying SSL certificates even for the simplest of WebPages. Personally, I think people should take this as a warning and start making plans for there own SSL certificates.

Google have promised to release more documentation on moving from HTTP to HTTPS, but for now has released a few tips:

  • Decide the kind of certificate you need: Single, multi-domain, or wildcard certificate
  • Use 2048-bit key certificates
  • Use relative URLs for resources that reside on the same secure domain
  • Use protocol relative URLs for all other domains
  • Don’t block your HTTPS site from crawling using the robots.txt
  • Allow indexing of your pages by search engines where possible. Avoid the noindex robots meta tag

Or, If you already have SSL installed and you would like to test your websites ensuring it is secure then please head over to Qualys Lab tool.

If you have any question or queries about SSL, HTTPS, or how this affects SEO then feel free to ask us below.
